As perceived risk increases, so too does the motivation to adopt precautionary measures. Failure to appraise the risk of a particular disease in a realistic way not only increases the likelihood of experiencing ill health, it may also lead to disease proliferation, overloaded public health facilities, serious illness and death. Research into behavioural responses to health threats suggests that risk perception is a major determinant in adopting measures to prevent disease. Fundamental to the adoption of and adherence to such behaviours are a range of psychological and social factors, in particular a person’s perception of risk, which is thought to play a key role in combating twenty-first-century global health threats such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The current coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has highlighted the importance of personal protective behaviour in limiting the spread of disease, as well as the reluctance of some individuals and groups to comply with public health recommendations, such as social distancing. It is hoped these findings will inspire further research into sociocognitive mechanisms involved in risk appraisal. Comparative unrealistic optimism was negatively associated with the adoption of protective behaviours, which is worrying, given that these preventive measures are critical in tackling the spread and health burden of COVID-19. Paradoxically, whereas absolute unrealistic optimism decreased over time, comparative unrealistic optimism increased, suggesting that whilst people became increasingly accurate in assessing their personal risk, they nonetheless overestimated that for others. The prevalence of unrealistic optimism appears to be influenced by the particular epidemic context. ![]() Despite differences in culture and health response, similar patterns were observed across all four countries. ![]() Taking advantage of a pre-existing international participative influenza surveillance network ( n = 12,378), absolute and comparative unrealistic optimism were measured at three epidemic stages (pre-, early, peak), and across four countries-France, Italy, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The current study addresses this gap in the literature by investigating whether people demonstrated optimism bias during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, how this changed over time, and whether unrealistic optimism was negatively associated with protective measures. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, a relative dearth of research existed in this domain regarding epidemics, which is surprising considering that this optimistic bias has been associated with a lack of engagement in protective behaviours critical in fighting twenty-first-century, emergent, infectious diseases. ![]() Unrealistic optimism, the underestimation of one’s risk of experiencing harm, has been investigated extensively to understand better and predict behavioural responses to health threats. ![]() Other amenities at this luxury resort include a children's pool, a gym, and outdoor tennis courts. The house we stayed was 151 Lasso drive, it was clean and comfortable, but we had issues with pool alarm going off randomly at night and in the day and after all the phone call and maintenance could not fix the problem, then there was poop in the pool and they would not clean until 2 days later( because there's no cleaning on the weekend supposedly, then when we demand the pool to be cleaned, the person cleaning the pool left a hose in the pool and the pool was over flooded the next morning), carbon monoxide malfunction in the middle of the night waking up everyone. Like many others on social media, Govindan had basically attempted to start a conversation around how race-dictated the nominations at the Golden Globes have been with the Michaela Coel headlined show I Could Destroy You being totally snubbed when it deserved a nod for sure, considering the sensitive issue of sexual assault it handled so well. ![]() ![]() Abby Govindan, an Indian-american comedian from Houston, Texas started off a series of tweets, posing as one of the show’s faking being the creator of Emily in Paris and the media believing her is my favorite dumb thing to happen on Twitter this week- Pole Doctress February 7, 2021 Now picking up on that, a US-based comedian has pulled off an elaborate prank on Twitter by posing as a writer on the show Emily in Paris and expressed her disappointment at the show being nominated. Even one of the show’s writers, Deborah Copaken, echoed the sentiments and wrote an opinion piece for The Guardian where she spoke about how despite being happy for her own show’s nomination, there might have been a much stronger contender with the Michaela Coel created I May Destroy You may have been the more deserving candidate. However, even though the cast and crew were obviously happy with the nominations, for many including a few from the show were also surprised given the lukewarm and sometimes even negative reviews the show got when it was released on the streaming site. Among them was the Netflix comedy-drama Emily in Paris which got nominated for two categories, one as the Best Comedy or Musical Series and Lily Collins picked up the other nomination for best actress. With the Golden Globe announcing their nominations for this year, there has been a lot of chatter over the usual snubs and surprises as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association put out their list. |
